  4. Michigan's Governor stirs a storm by dropping his running mate

  7.     Is he an ingrate who exploited a woman's wide popularity to
  8. get himself elected Governor and then dumped her when she was
  9. no longer useful to him? Or is he a courageous leader who faced
  10. up to the difficult task of telling an aging colleague that she
  11. was no longer capable of handling a high state office? Those
  12. clashing views of Democratic Governor James Blanchard have
  13. bedeviled Michigan voters ever since he dropped Lieutenant
  14. Governor Martha Griffiths, 78, as his re-election running mate.

  16.     Griffiths, a former 10-term Congresswoman who is widely
  17. revered by state Democrats, is not shy about expressing her
  18. opinion. "I elected him," she says of Blanchard, who talked her
  19. into joining him on the ticket in his tight 1982 race. When
  20. rumors arose last spring that Blanchard might choose a new
  21. running mate in seeking a third four-year term this year, she
  22. snapped, "He should be taken immediately to a psychiatrist."
  23. And as Blanchard spread his hopeful view that Griffiths might
  24. quietly withdraw, she called a press conference to proclaim
  25. that she was "available" to run again. Finally, following his
  26. announcement that he did not want her on the ticket, Griffiths
  27. declared, "The biggest problem in politics is that you help
  28. some s.o.b. get what he wants, and then he throws you off the
  29. train."

  31.     Griffiths wears a hearing aid and is physically frail, and
  32. even her admirers concede that she has grown a bit eccentric.
  33. But she scoffs at the notion that she is not up to her job.
  34. When the age issue arose in 1982 -- she was a mere 70 then --
  35. she dismissed it with the comment "I'm a year younger than
  36. Reagan. And I stay awake at meetings." As for her duties, she
  37. said, "You preside over the senate, cast a vote in case there's
  38. a tie and inquire every morning about the Governor's health."
  39. She figures she can handle that.

  41.     The Governor is either too much of a gentleman or too cagey
  42. to say precisely why he does not want Griffiths on his ticket.
  43. He did not cite her age and said only that he felt that
  44. dropping her was in the best interests of the state.

  46.     As Blanchard faced complaints of age and sex discrimination
  47. in his treatment of Griffiths, his major Republican opponent,
  48. state senate majority leader John Engler, seized the opening
  49. to announce that his running mate will be Connie Binsfeld, 66,
  50. a bland state senator and antiabortion activist. Blanchard
  51. countered by selecting Olivia Maynard, 54, who has been popular
  52. with senior citizens as director of the state office of
  53. services to the aging, to replace Griffiths. Ever loyal to her
  54. party, Griffiths said she will support Blanchard's re-election.
  55. And, presumably, she will continue to inquire about his health.
